Title: A History of Western Tibet
Author: Rev A H Francke
Edition Year: 1998
Cover: Hardback
Subject: History
Language: English
Abstract: Here is a unique feat in historiography of one of the most inhospitable and inaccessible regions of the East. The author reconstructs the history of Western Tibet and Ladakh region from primitive local records, edicts and folklore. Among the available sources, on the one hand there was purely subjective account documented by the court poets or writers in praise of their masters at times utterly exaggerating their marital exploits, on the other hand, there were accounts recorded by the foreign, mostly Westerners, not much familiar with the language, custom, mythological references, and sociocultural jagran. Yet the author strikes a credible and creditable balance. He has presented here a coherent, interesting and generally reliably, history of the region amply substantiated by maps, photographs and illustrations. The wars, migrations, religious battles, conversions, ethnic changes and influences spread over a vast span of time (B.C. 2001900 A.D.) are as far as possible remarkably put into a historical sequence.

Edition Year: 2000
Cover: Paperback
Subject: History
Language: English
Abstract: Just north of the Great Wall of China lies the city of Jehol (or Chengte), which was once the magnificent summer capital of the Manchu emperors. In the eighteenth century, Jehol was at its zenith of power and influence. During this period the Emperor Chien Lung (1736-96) built many magnificent monuments, including the Potala, built in the style of the style of the Potala in Lhasa, and the Hsin Kung temple monastery. Explorer Sven Hedin visited this city in 1930 and found Jehol and its monuments fast crumbling into ruin. In this book Hedin documents the city in detail, mindful that within a few years his descriptions and photographs could well be all that would remain of this magic city.

Language: English
Abstract: Every living being within his community in this earth is aware that there is a perceptible though unseen something beyond nature, a Power perhaps, which is responsible for the appearance or at least for its smooth functioning of this very world. Such a Power is considered responsible for whatever is happening, good or bad, within habitual routines as well as through unexpected, often violent, sudden events. Uma Marina Vesci in her collection of essays has very succinctly explained and discussed the various phenomena that we find in the search for this hidden power. She has pointed out that animals still possess those primordial powers that enable them to sense many of the natural events that often surprise and overwhelm us whereas mankind in general has lost many of these powers. Still there are some sensitive beings that we see as teachers or gurus who still have managed to keep such powers alive.
